Unleashing the Economic Potential of Disabled Individuals in the Internet Age

As a community, we must recognize the incredible potential and talent of disabled individuals. Too often, they are overlooked in the workforce, despite the fact that they can be incredibly valuable contributors to our economy—especially with the digital revolution and upsurge in remote work that has transformed our country’s economy.

I’ve been close to three generations of the Kessler family, and throughout my time in public service I’ve drawn on the lessons and legacy of Dr. Kessler as I’ve advocated for increased accessibility and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. I believe that all constituents are deserving of information and a representative who fights for their best interest. This is why as Assemblywoman I ensured that my website was accessible to people with disabilities—and was the only legislator in New Jersey’s State Assembly to do so.

According to the CDC, 1 in 4 people in the United States have a disability. Despite this significant number, disabled individuals are underrepresented in the workforce. The Kessler Foundation’s November 2022 Jobs Report showed the employment-to-population ratio for persons with disabilities to be 36.5%, compared to 74.4% for persons with no disabilities. While this report noted that data trends from the past year “suggest that more people with disabilities are succeeding in finding jobs,” the fact that the employment-to-population ratio of disabled individuals is less than half the ratio of non-disabled individuals tells us there is still much more work to be done.

We can’t afford to leave anyone behind in our economy. Expanding opportunities for disabled individuals will not only benefit them, but also strengthen New Jersey’s labor force. We can tap into a whole new pool of talent and creativity that will help our businesses and economy grow. Further, studies have shown that companies that prioritize disability inclusion often have higher employee morale and retention rates. And employment allows people with disabilities to earn a living, contribute to their local communities, and reduce their reliance on government support programs.

It’s time that we ensure that our children, veterans, and loved ones living with disabilities are given the opportunities to succeed that they deserve.
